Check out our generator sizing calculator for more help finding the right size generator for your power needs.
The first step in generator sizing is to determine central air conditioning requirements and your home's overall square footage. Together, this provides a good way to quickly ascertain your home's power needs. To determine the size, or 'tonnage' central air conditioner(s) you have, look at the nameplate on the outdoor air conditioner(s) for the BTU rating in the model number. One ton of cooling is equal to 12,000 BTU's. Most residential AC units start at 2 ton, or 24,000 BTU's and increase in half-ton increments up to 5 tons. GE's patented Symphony™ power controls offer a whole house solution for virtually every size home. To determine an accurate measurement of your home's total power requirements, it is recommended that you seek out a licensed electrician.
